MONSON, Mass. (WWLP) - Firefighters from several communities in eastern Hampden County were called in to put out a large brush fire along the railroad tracks in Monson late Thursday night into Friday morning. According to the Monson Fire Department, the call for a brush fire came in shortly before midnight in the area of 250 Palmer Road (Route 32). Firefighters arrived to find a railroad trestle on fire in a remote area. Firefighters from multiple local departments were then called in to assist with additional personnel, as well as water supply. Firefighters were able to get everything under control and cleared the area by 3:30 A.M. The fire however caused extensive damage, and the tracks will remain closed until until they are evaluated and repaired by the railroad company. Assisting the Monson Fire Department in their efforts were the Bondsville Fire Department, the Three Rivers Fire Department, the Palmer Fire Department, the Wilbraham Fire Department, the Brimfield Fire Department, and the Hampden Fire Department. The Monson Police Department also provided assistance through traffic control and the use of their department's UTV.
