CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — A 15-year-old was shot in Cary Wednesday afternoon and the suspected shooter is also a teen, according to Cary Police Chief Terry Sult. In a press conference shortly before 5:30 p.m., Sult said the 15-year-old had been shot in the leg or groin area and had non-life-threatening injuries. A 17-year-old is in custody for the incident, and Sult said two firearms were recovered from the suspect. On Thursday afternoon, officers responded to the area of Cary Towne Boulevard and Walnut Street in for an active shooter call. After the scene was secured by the Cary Police Department, Sult said one person had been injured in a shooting. Sult also said the situation was not consistent with an active shooter scenario. Sult praised an officer who was nearby and heard the shots. "[The officer] was able to render life saving aid to the juvenile victim very promptly and very professionally," Sult said. There is no ongoing threat to the public, he assured, saying the scene was contained and there is nothing for the surrounding community to be afraid of. Around 2:30 p.m., a 911 caller reported an active shooter to police in the 600 block of Walnut Street. This is in the area of the Cary Park Town Center including a Harris Teeter and several restaurants including a Penn Station and a Wingstop. Seven shots can be heard ringing out in a video of the shooting circulating on social media. The video appears to show multiple people in an altercation that went from the Penn Station sub shop area out onto Cary Towne Blvd. Sult said that investigators believe the shooting was not random in nature and that the suspect and victim were known to each other. "If you look at the video on social media, you can see there are other people involved in the fight," Sult said. "Whether or not there are charges coming in as a result of that depends on if we can identify them, the role they played, behaviors that were involved." As the investigation continues, the Town of Cary said Walnut Street is expected to remain closed between Cary Towne Boulevard and Maynard Road through the evening commute to "ensure public safety". Three schools in the area went into code yellow lockdowns as a response to the potential threat and heavy presence of police, fire and EMS crews that lined the areas surrounding the intersection. All schools reported their students are safe. Cary High School at 638 Walnut Street said it was on a code yellow lockdown at 2:46 p.m. Shortly after, another school less than a mile away also went on a code yellow lockdown, East Cary Magnet Middle on SE Maynard Road. Adams Elementary School at 805 Cary Towne Blvd. also entered a lockdown. All lockdowns have been lifted and students were released. Due to the ongoing investigation, however, Cary town officials said a "heightened police presence at Cary High School" can be expected tomorrow. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Cary CrimeStoppers at (919) 460-4636.
