Nine student-athletes have been charged in connection with hazing incidents in the locker room at Farmersville High School.“This has not been pleasant for any of us,” said Farmersville ISD police chief Steve Wade who oversaw the weeks-long investigation into the allegations. One student-athlete was charged on September 26, the day district police were notified of the first incident, according to Wade. The remaining eight students were taken into custody Tuesday.“I have school-aged grandchildren and I would want someone to protect them, so I take it personal,” said Wade. The students are charged with unlawful restraint, a class A misdemeanor and more serious than a class B misdemeanor hazing charge. There have been at least three incidents since the start of the semester, including two on September 26. The first incident happened prior to that date, Wade said. Each report involves a different victim. No injuries were reported.Wade said he can’t confirm details about what happened or name the sport the athletes play since they are minors and could be identified if those details were revealed.Wade said it was a coach who helped the victim who first came forward and reported the alleged hazing to police. He also addressed questions that have been raised about the students supervision during the incidents.“Coaches were there. They were in the area. They just weren’t in that room. That room is an area where kids are dressing and undressing and showering. It’d be inappropriate to have adults in there with them,” said Wade. The Farmersville ISD Police Department will submit all evidence gathered to the Collin County District Attorney for processing, according to a press release from the Farmersville ISD.“It is important to note that school disciplinary actions are separate from criminal charges. School discipline will be individualized, taking into account the seriousness of the offense, the student’s prior disciplinary record, statutory requirements, and any relevant disabilities,” the release said.
