TULARE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A Tulare neighborhood is in shock after a man and woman were shot and killed during an apparent break-in early Thursday morning. A suspect, who had been shot, was found in the backyard and taken into custody. Neighbors described the family living in that home as "sweet, good people," and they say it comes as a shock that anyone would want to harm them. "This neighborhood is very quiet, everybody is usually very friendly for anything to happen, and in such a way is not normal," said Neighbor Jaime Tercero. Around 3 a.m., Tulare Police received a 911 call regarding a home intruder on the 200 block of Berkeley Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they found an unidentified 38-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman, both fatally wounded inside the home. The official cause of death has not been released by investigators. However, police say the male victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to a local hospital where she later died. As far as the suspect, he was shot by another individual inside the home. "I think that is every homeowner's right to have, to protect their home," Tercero said. The suspect was taken into custody by police. Another resident who is close to the family, spoke with YourCentralValley off-camera. She explained that it's a multi-generational home, and the family owns a small business in town. She continued by saying the family had a guard dog in the backyard, up to a month ago, and believes if the dog was still there, it would have deterred the suspect. The motive is still under investigation, but Tulare Police believe this was an isolated incident and there are no additional suspects.
