(KRON) -- Three employees of an Oakland McDonald's claim their hours were cut as retaliation after they complained about life-threatening incidents that happened at the fast food restaurant, according to a California Division of Occupational Safety and Health complaint obtained by KRON4. The employees work at the McDonald's located at 6300 East 14th St. They worked full-time until Dec. 20, 2023, when they filed a violence complaint to CalOSHA. McDonald’s says onions from California-based produce company linked to deadly E. coli outbreak According to the employees, there was an "incident with a machete" on Sept. 16, 2023, and an armed robbery on Dec. 14, 2023. On Dec. 20, management permanently closed the store lobby and told employees their hours would be cut, per the CalOSHA complaint. Management said workers' shifts would be switched from eight hours per day to six hours per day, but the employees who complained saw their hours cut by 50% or close to it, they said. Other employees allegedly maintained full-time schedules or were asked to work extra to maintain their income. The employees who had their hours cut are struggling to pay their bills and/or feed their families, they said. "We believe an investigation into the actual hours worked for each employee, before and after we filed the CalOSHA Complaint on December 20, 2023, will show that the complainants have disproportionately borne the brunt of the impact of the lobby closure, as a form of retaliation by management for filing the CalOSHA Complaint," the employees said. The workers have demanded a meeting with store ownership over the alleged cut hours.
