(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A library on the northwest side of Colorado Springs will close on Dec. 1. FOX21 News sat down with the Board of Trustees President to learn more about the Pikes Peak Library District's (PPLD) decision not to renew the lease of its Rockrimmon branch and what that means for the future of other libraries in southern Colorado. Several community members FOX21 News spoke with said they are sad, confused, and angry with the decision. "This community is a small community and they need a library in a small community for the kids and elderly," said Toni McDaniel, a Colorado Springs community member. PPLD board votes to close Rockrimmon library branch Helen McChesney, another community member, said the loss of the library changes her plans: "Every two weeks we play mahjong with a group of senior citizens. It's a shame that these young kids are not going to be able to experience what we get to experience. Without them, without the books, there'll be no future." The board is focusing on the sustainability of the entire district, but the Rockrimmon location is not the only branch currently under a lease, leaving the community concerned another closure could be around the corner. Last year, the board hired professionals to audit several libraries within the district. The Rockrimmon and Ruth Holley branches were selected for possible closures and because Rockrimmon's renewal lease is up in December, board members decided to address it first. "A lot of data was collected based on what we need to sustain the library so we can continue providing services at the level that we want to provide," said Dora Gonzales, President of the Board of Trustees. While there are no plans to close the Ruth Holly branch at this time, there are a total of seven libraries occupying rented space, rather than being owned by PPLD. "Rockrimmon has the most expensive lease, we currently pay $242,000 a year in the rent and then about $25,000 in utilities," Gonzales explained. "We know that we're going to be able to save money from not renewing this lease and as our preliminary budget sits right now, we have very little money. We have $0 set aside for anything that needs to be fixed in any of our facilities." The last chance for the community to visit the Rockrimmon branch is Nov. 30 and board members are inviting the public to visit nearby locations like the Pikes Peak Library District - East Library or or 21c Library, but both of those branches are more than five miles away from the Rockrimmon branch. "There's been some conversation, and I don't know how or when that will happen, but possibly bringing a bookmobile here so that we can address people that can't get to other libraries," Gonzales said. There are currently 15,000 people who consider the Rockrimmon branch as their home library. As for the staff of the branch, the board said they plan to disperse them across the district to meet staffing shortages.
