(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The city's first Nigerian restaurant opened its doors to the public on Wednesday. It's called Ówàmbẹ̀ African Restaurant and Lounge and serves up authentic Nigerian meals made with family recipes. "I want them to feel close to home, you know? I don't want people to leave Colorado Springs. This place is beautiful," said Adetoun Fisher, the restaurant's owner. Fisher moved to Colorado Springs from Nigeria and noticed that Africans in her military community kept leaving after their service ended. She says the African population is growing in the area, and she'd like it to keep growing. "So when we had the vision to bring a restaurant, it's nothing but a top-notch restaurant for my people and the people of Colorado," said Fisher, "I love Colorado, and I'm glad that Colorado actually welcomed me."The journey hasn't been without struggle. Fisher's husband left for Air Force training just two days before their opening. Fisher also owns the only African grocery store in Colorado Springs, called Shop and Smile African and International Market. She manages both, all while caring for two children under five and two dogs. "It's been tough for me. I've been crying. You know, I've got two kids. I need to manage the two businesses," said Fisher. She said it is a lot, as her 3-year-old daughter (very cutely) interrupted the interview with a question. However, the couple couldn't give up one dream for the other. Her customers, some from Nigeria, are very grateful. "This means a lot to me because I've been in Colorado Springs for almost four years, and I've not really had that taste of Nigerian food," said Omolade Ikumapayi, as she sat at Ówàmbẹ̀ waiting for her food. Ówàmbẹ̀ is open all week — except for Sundays — from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. The possibility of special events, like birthday parties among other things are available on Sundays.
