BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and BRProud is highlighting a new support group for breast cancer patients. The group is a joint venture between Mary Bird Perkins and Baton Rouge General.  "I've seen cancer in my family, my mother died of cancer," said Janice Walter, breast cancer survivor.     Walter is a participant in the new group. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023.  "I don't get really upset about stuff because I found out it doesn't do any good and I know it makes a difference in how you look at any illness," said Walter.  Walter is now cancer free after completing radiation treatment.  Livingston Parish family copes with loss of home, cars after Hurricane Francine hits Louisiana "I have a good support group, my church, my kids, my doctors and when I started radiation it's like a whole new family," said Walter.  Walter also said the support system includes the new group.  "There is a great group of ladies that are with Mary Bird Perkins. The doctors give you so much information and they really put you at ease. They tell you what to expect, what you can do," said Walter.  Angela Hammett with Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center said the group started in April. They noticed a need for the group in the Baton Rouge area.  "We have patients that come and it's their first time and we have patients that come and bring a significant other and we have guest speakers at each of our events," said Hammett.
