CLIFTON, Va. (DC News Now) -- One Clifton man's journey to locate his son in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene transformed into a multi-trip mission to bring relief to storm-ravaged communities. Jeff Green saw news of the hurricane hitting Ashville, N.C., where his son Oakey lives. For hours, he heard nothing from Oakey. He packed his pickup truck with supplies and tools, and headed south. "What's normally an eight-hour trip took me about 17 hours to get down there. It was really bad," Green said. How to help victims of Hurricane Helene "A lot of people died. He's okay. His house was okay. They were just cut off and out of power. No phone. They didn't know for two and a half days really, what was going on outside of their neighborhood," Green added. "They were completely cut off." Green said his son was lucky, noting severe and widespread damage elsewhere in the area. "Most of the devastation is hard to put into words," he said. "You're driving down the road and there's trucks upside down on the corner and people's houses are gone. And what you used to know is the beautiful, pristine little shopping center along the river is now not there. It's very hard to describe it." Green said he couldn't leave knowing what happened in Ashville. "I just couldn't leave there and come back to my nice house in Clifton and take a hot shower and sleep in my bed, knowing what people were dealing with there," he said. Green drove back to Virginia and his wife rallied the Clifton community. Green, a general contractor, had a trailer handy, which neighbors and friends filled with essentials for another trip to North Carolina. As he orchestrates donations, North Carolinians tell him what items are most critically needed. He said communities are inundated with clothing that they can't sort. Among the most direly needed items are medical supplies such as inhalers and oxygen tanks. Propane tanks, rubber storage totes and new sleeping bags are also greatly needed, Green said.
