FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE)—The City of Fresno announced Thursday that it received $52.1 million from the State of California. The money is from the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program. The city says this award will be combined with other previously secured state grants to fully fund the $115 million FAX System Efficiency and Accessibility Improvement Project. According to city officials, the money will fund: $21.5 million of the $28.6 million required to expand transit service along Church Avenue to connect the community to higher education. It will include bus stop build-outs, HAWK crossings, complete street improvements, and the purchase of hydrogen vehicles. $23.2 million of the $74.6 million required for the planning and construction of a hydrogen fueling facility to support the department’s transition to zero emissions by 2040. $6.9 million of the $11.3 million required for the construction of accessible bus stop improvements including bus stop engineering and design, bus stop build-outs, and the installation of new passenger amenities. $450,000 for an On-Demand Improvement Study to conduct a needs analysis for non-paratransit on-demand service to include identifying solutions for transportation to Fresno Yosemite International Airport. “These funds will be instrumental in helping our transportation department meet and exceed the expectations of our community,” said Mayor Jerry Dyer. “The residents of Fresno rely on FAX to get them to work, doctor appointments, school, and everywhere they need to go. I’m proud of our team and the work they do every day to provide the best service possible.”
