This Saturday, the Salem Housing Authority’s waiting lists for five affordable apartment complexes in Salem will open for the first time in months.  All properties limit tenants to an income of no more than $38,400 a year for an individual or $49,320 for a family of four. Some have lower income limits, and some require applicants to have a disability to meet other criteria. Tenants at the apartments generally pay no more than 30% of their monthly income on rent. The apartments range in size, able to house families between one and nine people. The waitlists will be open for applications starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. They will close on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 11:59 p.m.  To apply, visit the Salem Housing Authority’s website. There are also paper applications available on request by contacting the Salem Housing Authority by email at [email protected] or by calling 503-588-6368. The office, at 360 Church St. S.E., is open between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and closed for lunch between noon and 1 p.m. Applicants will be placed on the list in the order their application is received, spokeswoman Sarah Murray said. People can apply to multiple properties by entering their information once then selecting multiple properties when prompted at the end of the application process.  The Salem Housing Authority opens waitlists for specific properties when it determines there are too few applicants remaining to move into apartments they expect to become available over the next two years, Murray said.  The Housing Authority last took applicants for several of its properties in May.Typically, people spend between 18 months and five years on the waitlist depending on unit turnover and availability, Murray said. While waiting, she said it’s important to keep their information with the Salem Housing Authority up to date.“That is the most important thing to make sure that they get notified,” she said.
