(KRON) – Javier Marin-Gonzales, a 25-year-old Honduran national based out of Oakland, is facing serious prison time and a $5 million fine for the alleged distribution of fentanyl around the Bay Area, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on Thursday.  Marin-Gonzales allegedly distributed fentanyl on three separate occasions around the San Francisco Bay Area, including one instance in the Tenderloin neighborhood, court records show.  According to court documents, the Honduran national was extradited back to the US this week after “the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) learned that Marin-Gonzales had traveled back to Honduras” on the day of his indictment on Tuesday. The Justice Department said it worked with Honduran authorities, the FBI, and the Drug Enforcement Agency to both arrest and extradite Marin-Gonzalez back to northern California on Wednesday.  This extradition marks the fifth extradition of an alleged drug distributor from Honduras to the Northern District of California this year, according to the Justice Department. “By bringing Marin-Gonzales to face justice in the United States, we are sending a clear message: those who profit from the trafficking of deadly substances will be held accountable, no matter where they operate,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp.  The indictment, according to court records, charges Marin-Gonzales with the distribution of 40 grams or more of fentanyl. If convicted, Marin-Gonzales faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, a $5 million fine, and a lifetime of supervised release.  “We remain steadfast in our commitment to hold accountable drug traffickers operating in the Tenderloin,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Bob P. Beris. “The extradition of Marin-Gonzales is another example of how strong global partnerships keep our communities safe.”  This investigation also led to charges against “multiple” East Bay defendants who allegedly went into the Tenderloin neighborhood to “engage in drug dealing,” the DOJ said.
