TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topekans will have the chance to help give local stray cats a place to shelter this winter with a special volunteer opportunity. The Helping Hands Humane Society (HHHS) is partnering up with the Midwest Kitten Coalition this weekend to build shelters for local stray cats to use during the colder months. Volunteers are needed to bring in materials to build the homes, put them together for distribution and take them to where they're needed. "However many people will show up," Grace Clinton with HHHS said. "My hope would be we have at least 30." Clinton said stray cats don't need to be brought into the shelter but can instead be supported in the places they've come to call home. With potentially thousands of stray cats in the Topeka area, this support method can help organizations like HHHS give local cats some measure of protection from the cold without taking them away from where they are living and filling up the shelter. Topeka Cat Café marks 100 cat adoptions since opening "Cats are so elusive there's really not a good way to count them," Clinton said. People can bring large Styrofoam coolers, dry and clean straw and duct tape on the day of the build. HHHS is also accepting a wide variety of other donations people can bring in if they want to help out in other ways. The HHHS wish list can be found by clicking here. The build day runs from noon to 3 p.m. on Oct. 27 at 5720 Southwest 21st Street. Supplies can be dropped off from Oct. 21 to Oct. 26. Volunteers are also needed to drive or deliver completed shelters to caregivers the following week. New QDOBA opening soon in north Topeka For more local news, click here.
