SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The jury is deliberating the verdict in the Leilani Simon murder trial. Simon faces life in prison should she be found guilty of the murder of her 20-month-old son Quinton. She's accused of killing him and throwing away his body in a dumpster in October 2022. Throughout the trial, the jury heard from 33 witnesses ranging from FBI officials and local police detectives to Simon's brother and her then-boyfriend. The jury is now tasked with deciding on the 19 counts against Simon: malice murder, two counts of felony murder, concealing the death of another, false report of a crime and 14 counts of making a false statement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Dean walks the jury through the 19-count indictment Simon faces. 11:37 a.m. - Dean ends the state's closing argument after an hour and a half. The court breaks for a 15-minute recess. 11:54 p.m. - Judge Tammy Stokes calls the court back into session. Defense attorney Martin Hilliard begins his closing argument. "They have speculated wildly, I might add, but they've produced no evidence," he says. 12:45 p.m. - Chatham County Assistant District Attorney Jenny Parker concludes closing arguments for the state. 1:08 p.m. - Parker wraps up closing arguments. The jury is released for lunch. Stokes says she will charge the jury after lunch. 2:25 p.m. - Court is back in session. Stokes charges the jury, explaining what they need to consider to reach a verdict. 3:00 p.m. - The jury is excused for deliberations. 3:15 p.m. - Stokes calls a recess as the court awaits a verdict. 5:00 p.m. - Judge Stokes returns to the bench.
