ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – After the historic and devastating flooding last weekend, the City of Roswell is sizing up the damage and trying to get back to business as usual. On Thursday, Roswell City Council made an emergency declaration in the hopes of unlocking more help. Silvia is one resident who says her home was engulfed Saturday night into Sunday morning. Her family had to climb into the attic to escape the waters. "It was a lot of water…And also my basement, it was like a swimming pool it was full of water too," said Slyvia. The mayor of Roswell said due to heavy damage the civic center and Roswell Museum and Art Center will not be open until next year. "When it happened, the people here had to evacuate through the roof....this whole parking lot out here was full of vehicles and almost every one of them has water over the door and up on the window," said Roswell Mayor Tim Jennings. Mayor Jennings also said the zoo saw heavy damage and will be closed until further notice. The airport was closed for a few days but has since reopened. The mayor said more than 100 businesses were affected and four bridges in the area sustained damage. "This was a really perfect storm as far as storms go and it dropped so much water so quick," said Mayor Jennings. The mayor said even after this tragedy, the community has come together to support one another. Just like after Ruidoso, it's so wonderful to see the people and how they help each other. It's phenomenal," said Mayor Jennings. The emergency declaration, approved by the Roswell City Council, allowed the city to request funding and resources from the state to cover repairs and other emergency expenses. meanwhile, Roswell schools are expected to be back in session Monday after the district's buses needed repairs.
