RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin work to rebuild Route 1 in Richmond's Southside between Chesterman Avenue and Brinser Street on Monday, Oct. 28. According to VDOT, the improvements to the road will include realigning Hopkins Road and Harwood Street, which meet Route 1 less than 200 feet from each other, as well as installing turn lanes, new water and sewer lines, new sidewalks and new traffic signals. Residents of Richmond's Southside should anticipate possible water service disruptions while the project takes place, but any residents affected by these disruptions will be notified ahead of time. The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2026.
