CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — The ACI inmate who walked off of a work detail nearly two weeks ago faced a judge on Thursday. Joshua Torres, 26, was arraigned on a charge of unlawfully escaping the ACI. The judge set bail at $30,000, which is 10 times the bail guidelines. No plea was entered, as his case was moved to Superior Court. He is due back in court in February. Officials said Torres abandoned his job at the Central Distribution Center warehouse on Oct. 10 when police said he entered a woman's gray SUV with Massachusetts plates. He was recaptured on Wednesday at a West Greenwich motel. IN-DEPTH: ACI inmate who walked off of work detail has history of escape Torres was just months away from his 18th birthday when he was charged with escaping from custody in 2015, according to an arrest report obtained through a public records request. Then 17, Torres left a Warren group home without permission on Christmas Day, the report stated. Before he abandoned his job assignment earlier this month, Torres was serving time for carrying a firearm without a permit as a person previously convicted of a violent crime. Providence police spotted Torres and three other men parked at the site of a 2019 homicide back in February 2021, according to a police report. Torres was then taken into custody as a probation violator and had a tentative release date of March 2027. Since Torres violated the terms of his probation in that case by walking off the job earlier this month, he was presented as a violator and a judge ordered him held without bail on Thursday. In court, R.I. State Police Corporal Steve Brown told a judge that Torres previously escaped the ACI in 2021. Entries made in the R.I. Department of Corrections (RIDOC) inmate search portal appeared to reflect that. RIDOC spokesperson J.R. Ventura disputed Torres escaped the ACI in 2021, stating there was no record of that, and clarified what may have caused the confusion. "Because his 2021 convictions were controlling sentences (carry pistol without a lic. / Poss. of a firearm after conv. of a crime of violence), our system automatically updates these files to his most recent charge," Ventura said. "This causes confusion for people who do not work with this system regularly, and we are looking to change that." Torres was also previously convicted of burglary, first-degree robbery and conspiracy in March 2017 for his role in a Glocester home invasion in 2016. He was sentenced to 25 years with nine to serve.
