METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) — A SWAT roll in Jefferson Parish ends with one man in custody and a robot struck by gunfire, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. On Thursday, Oct. 24, deputies responded to the corner of Turnbull Drive and West Esplanade Avenue in Metairie, where they say a man barricaded himself inside a home in the area. (WGNO/Ashley Hamilton)(WGNO/Ashley Hamilton)(WGNO/Ashley Hamilton) "I could hear the emergency vehicles coming up. And after about 20 of them, I knew something was up," said nearby resident Dennis Cousins. In a press conference, Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said the subject reportedly suffered a mental episode, causing his wife to obtain an emergency committal. A second family member reportedly attempted to persuade the man to enter the hospital, but a fight happened, leading to deputy response. "When our deputies arrived on the scene, they communicated with him through the front window, but they ended up firing shots from within the house. Our deputies retreated at that point in time and did not return fire at that point. Just heard the gunshots from inside the house. We ended up setting the perimeter and activating the negotiation team," said Lopinto. Lopinto says the man had several guns and managed to damage one of the SWAT team's robots. "He had a shotgun at one point in time. He also had a rifle point. I think he had a pistol also. So I don't know what gun was used to shoot the robot, but we'll certainly figure that out. We're treating this as a medical incident. We know he was mentally unstable," said Lopinto. After several hours, the suspect surrendered peacefully and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. He has not been identified, and there is no word on the charges he may face. It's an ending that nearby residents were relieved to hear. "It seems like the gentleman didn't get injured. He's going to have some issues and some problems, but at least he's alive," said Cousins. Lopinto tells us that no deputies were injured during the standoff. He also says there are no prior incidents reported at that residence. The investigation remains ongoing.
