It definitely felt much more like late October on Thursday across Central and Eastern Kentucky with a cooler air-mas arriving in the wake of a departing cold front. Temperatures were chilly out the door this morning with most locations dipping down into the upper 30s. Lots of sunshine and a light northeast breeze kept afternoon highs in the mid-60s, which is right on par for this time of the year. Our rollercoaster ride of temperatures will continue to end the week as much warmer air returns albeit briefly. Another cold front will be on the move Friday and set to drop through the Ohio Valley bringing another round of unseasonably warm air to the region. Southwest winds will pick up and with mostly sunny skies expected afternoon highs should run back into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees, a good 10 to 15 degrees above average. This system has a better shot at producing a few much needed showers across the area but there won’t be a lot of moisture to work with so the activity should be isolated to scattered at best. The best window for the shower chances will be Friday evening and into Saturday morning so there is a chance a few high school football games may be impacted by showers and while the risk for thunderstorms is low, there could be some lightning potential so keep that in mind. Heading into the weekend another area of high pressure will bring cooler, drier air back to the commonwealth so it’s looking pleasantly cool for the final weekend of October. Any lingering shower chances should be confined to the morning hours Saturday but the remainder of the day is looking nice. It should be a good day for any outdoor activities including the last “daily double” of the fall with the fall meet at Keeneland wrapping up Saturday afternoon followed by Kentucky and Auburn at Kroger Field on Saturday night. Afternoon highs should be into the mid-60s with a good bit of sunshine but you’ll want to take a jacket or sweatshirt for the game as temperatures will cool off through the evening. Looking ahead to the final few days of October, tranquil weather will set up shop again with more sunshine expected and afternoon highs moderating back through the 70s, which is well above average . It should be breezy as we get closer to Halloween and there is a chance we could see a few showers sneak in by next Thursday so we’ll keep an eye on that. With a pleasant weekend on the way it is a good time to check out all the fall colors across the area! While the summer drought has impacted the vibrance of the fall foliage there are still a lot of pretty colors out there. The fall foliage map shows much of our area in the moderate range with peak colors expected over the next couple of weeks. ABC 36 HOUR FORECAST THURSDAY NIGHT: Fair skies, still cool.
