KANSAS CITY, Mo.- A Kansas City parks board member recently lost his seat, but why? FOX4 asked three different people that question Thursday. Tom Gorenc was a Kansas City Parks & Recreation commissioner until sometime during the week of Monday, October 14th. He's since been replaced by Michael Meier. Wednesday, October 24th, the Parks & Rec website still had Gorenc up as a commissioner. Thursday of this week, Gorenc's picture had been replaced with Meier's. Missouri Amendment 6 ‘going to have a drastic impact on public safety’ Tuesday, October 22nd, Meier was already in Gorenc's spot at their meetings that take place twice a month. Gorenc was there Tuesday, October 8th during their first meeting of the month. The Kansas City mayor appoints the five members of the Parks & Recreation Commission. They're not elected.  Gorenc wouldn't talk to FOX4, but we were able to ask former Parks & Recreation Commissioner David Mecklenburg about this. We asked him why he believes Gorenc could have been removed. Mecklenburg could only speculate, but he was removed by Mayor Quinton Lucas' office as well. "There is a movement to make Washington Square Park the new baseball field," he said to FOX4 Thursday. Mecklenburg was referring to the Kansas City Royals and its quest for a new stadium. He also said Gorenc was opposed to the idea. About 45 minutes before our interview with Mecklenburg, we had already had that discussion with Mayor Quinton Lucas. "You know, I hear a lot of different baseball stadium ideas all the time," Mayor Lucas said when asked about people who believed that Gorenc was removed because of his opposition to the Royals moving to Washington Square Park, just east of Union Station. "From Washington Square Park, to the Crossroads, to the Sprint Campus in Overland Park, to everything under the sun, and so, you know, I think that there is a lot more work to be done on the Royals sharing with us where they'd like that site to be. In the meantime, here at Kansas City government, we keep up positive conversations long term." Chiefs finalize trade for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins The Royals wouldn't comment Thursday. Mecklenburg said even if the Parks & Recreation Commission wanted to sell that park, that would still require a vote of the people before that sale could be finalized. "You know, I'm not playing the vote counting game either at parks board or here at city council in Kansas City, because I'd imagine finances would be a big part of anything," Mayor Lucas said in response to a question about whether getting rid of Gorenc would make it easier to get approval of that board to support a change for Washington Square Park. Mayor Lucas followed that up by saying the Royals are looking at sites all around the region, and he hopes the team stays in his city. Right after our interview with Mayor Lucas, Parks Director Chris Cotten just happened to be in the council chambers as well on Floor 26. "Tom was a good board member, yes," Cotten said when asked if he missed Gorenc being on the Parks Board. "Yeah, I don't have any comment on that," he said when asked about the removal of Gorenc and whether it had anything to do with his comments on Washington Square Park. Cotten's bosses are the five members of the commission that are appointed by the mayor. He also said he reports to City Manager Brian Platt.
