SPEEDWAY, Ind. - Speedway police are continuing to investigate a shooting that left a 28-year-old dead at a senior citizen housing complex early Thursday morning. The passenger window of a white Dodge was shattered, with multiple bullet holes visible, after neighbors reported hearing a handful of gunshots just after midnight. “I grabbed my shotgun and went to the door and looked out and saw two guys jumping up and down on the car, kicking it in trying to get in it,” said neighbor David Jones. David said the people he saw trying to break into the victim's locked car quickly got into another car and sped away. According to Speedway PD, around 12:15 a.m. officers were in the area of West 10th St. and North Norfolk St. when they also heard several gunshots coming from the 1100 block of North Norfolk Street. When officers were checking the area, they located a white vehicle with multiple bullet holes in the passenger side of the vehicle. Inside the vehicle, police reportedly found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers provided first aid until medical services arrived. Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. On Thursday, officials with the Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the person who died as 28-year-old Lawrence D-Marcus Echols III -Truitt. “It's sad. It really is sad,” said neighbor Ron Willis. “I think people are comfortable living here, but things like what happened overnight make people apprehensive.” The Lakeview Village Apartments houses senior citizens. Ron praised the management for maintaining a normally safe property but said the violence reflects a larger problem that goes way beyond Speedway. “There's a lot of meanness going on in Speedway, Indianapolis, our state and country at large if you think about it,” said Willis. Police reports show over just the last two days prior to the killing, numerous car break-ins, thefts and even a shots fired incident were reported in and around the same complex. “This is a good neighborhood over here, so you guys dealing dope out in the parking lot, you’ve got eyes on you all the time. You ought to go somewhere else leave these old people alone over here,” said Jones. It's still not clear why the 28-year-old victim was on the senior housing property or if any the other recent crimes are connected to the homicide. Police have not given any information on a suspect or a motive for the shooting. Speedway police confirm the shooting marked the city's first murder of 2024. So far, no arrests have been made in the case. Anyone with information can still contact the Speedway Police Department. Jesse Wells contributed to this report.
