ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — The home where the Moss family lived for 40 years was washed away in an instant. The place where their children grew up was left to nothing but the home's foundation. Everything inside the home was gone until the Asheville Police Department found familiar photos. “Then all of a sudden I see that picture, and it was just like I couldn’t even speak,” said Mary Moss, a victim of Helene. Mary was left speechless when photos of her sons were found weeks after Helene. They are keepsakes she couldn’t replace. Detective Sam DeGrave with the APD along with some other volunteers were the ones to find the faded photo.  “We were down transitioning from immediate response into search and rescue and recovery, and I found a photo of a little girl,” DeGrave said. DeGrave saw value in the water-logged photos, so he decided to start collecting them. He had hope that one day each photo would find its way back to its owner. “I encountered several photos throughout the flood zone. Amid all the debris, there would be photos hung from trees or in the dirt,” DeGrave said. Meanwhile, the Moss family had nothing but the clothes on their backs. Yet five miles down the river, photos of Mary's sons washed up on the riverbank.  The photos were cleaned off and then posted on the APD’s Facebook page. The photos are irreplaceable.    “To find one of Tommy. I’m going to get emotional now. You can’t describe that feeling ... especially when you look around at all of this devastation," Mary said. The Moss family is forever grateful for the APD's efforts to help families get their photos back, especially after losing everything. The APD will continue to update its Facebook page as it finds more photos. To contact DeGrave to pick up photos, email [email protected].
