ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — A local teacher at Carroll High School was honored Thursday by the Allen County Sheriff's Department. Gary Platt has been helping to shape students' lives since 1999, but he also just helped potentially save lives after helping to restore an essential piece of equipment for the Sheriff's Department. It's common practice for local law enforcement to use DJI drones for a number of things, from helping get to a scene faster before officers can respond, to looking for missing people. They play an important role for the Allen County Sheriff's Department and law enforcement statewide. When an integral piece on the SWAT team's DJI drone broke, Officer Kyle Gator knew just the person to turn to. Platt teaches first year students how to take an idea in their head, turn it into a design and eventually bring it to life via a 3D printer. "I am honored. I'm, you know, I'm proud of the fact that we were able to come up with a solution to that. And, you know, just a little bit overwhelmed," said Platt, introduction to engineering and design instructor. The piece that was replaced would've normally been almost $200 dollars and would've taken the drone out of commission for at least a month. Platt was able to replace it in a day for just a dollar. In total he was able to fix three drones for the department and he says he looks forward to future partnerships with the Allen County Sheriff's Department and possibly even other law enforcement agencies in the future.
