NATCHITOCHES, La. (KTAL/KMSS) - A local university has announced a new scholarship that was founded by a teacher from Texas. The Anne Barry Graves Endowed Superior Graduate Scholarship will help graduate students in Northwestern State University's Department of Biology and Microbiology. The scholarship was initiated when Edna Anne Barry Graves of Lubbock donated $60,000 to the cause. The Louisiana Board of Regents is matching Graves' donation and the total endowment will be $100,000. Image of Anne Bary Graves provided by NSU's Public Information and Media Relations office. Dr. Chris Lyles is the director of NSU's School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. He said the gift will significantly impact future students and programs that are currently in development. The scholarship is the first of its kind at NSU, as it provides financial assistance to biological science graduate students. Graves donated the money through the NSU Foundation in honor of her parents, Geneva and Fredrick Barry. Her parents supported her educational journey and sent her brother to medical school, too. Graves is giving back by helping students the way her parents once helped her. Graves graduated from NSU with a bachelor's in biology education in 1972. She taught at DeRidder High before becoming a special education teacher in Minden. She earned a master's degree from McNeese State University and began teaching collegiately after 25 years at Sam Houston High School in Westlake. Throughout her career, Graves worked as a medical lab tech and a human anatomy and physiology instructor. Her achievements include multiple research programs, numerous awards, and a Fulbright Fellowship to Japan. She was a member of many state, national, and international clubs. Graves' father, Fredrick Barry, was a photojournalist and a WWII veteran. Her mother, Geneva, was a registered nurse.
