(NATIONAL) — Another busy hurricane season is slowly starting to wrap up across the Atlantic Ocean. The official hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30. Climatologically speaking, hurricane season typically peaks around Sept. 10 for tropical cyclone activity. The graphic above shows the most common dates for hurricanes and tropical storms to form - from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). As of Oct. 10, the NHC has tracked and recorded 13 tropical systems in the Atlantic Ocean; four of these systems were classified as tropical storms, and the other nine included five hurricanes and four major hurricanes. Three of the major hurricanes struck the United States at one point or another. These included Beryl, Helene, and Milton. The fourth major hurricane—Kirk—remained over mostly open waters during its time. Hurricane Milton, one of the more recent hurricanes, devastated portions of Florida when it struck. Not only was the flooding and storm surge a big problem, but the spinning tropical cyclone also produced several substantial tornadoes. Over in the eastern Pacific Ocean, less activity has been reported. 10 total tropical systems have been noted since the end of Sept; of these systems, seven were just tropical storms. This adds up as ingredients aren't usually quite as favorable for hurricane development in the Pacific; there were also two major hurricanes reported during that time. As of Thursday, an additional major hurricane (Kristy) is swirling across the Pacific Ocean with winds at 150 mph and a rating of Category 4. The storm is headed to the northwest with no major U.S. land masses currently in its path.
