MONROE, N.C. – A wanted fugitive in Union County was captured in Laurinburg, North Carolina following a months-long investigation. Cleveland Waters, 42, had been at large since May 31st when he escaped police custody. He was apprehended Thursday without incident. “This is a testament to all of these officers’ determination, hard work, and willingness to work as a team for the overall safety of our community,” Sheriff Cathey said.”I am thankful another dangerous offender is off our streets and in a jail cell.” Waters was briefly apprehended on May 31st on charges for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and more. Once in custody, police said Waters presented information that could lead to the seizure of a large amount of illegal narcotics. Waters, in handcuffs, went with detectives in an unmarked police car for an undercover operation near Carroll Street and Rolling Hills Drive. As an officer started to leave the parking lot during the operation, police said Waters attempted to escape. The officer got out to stop him, but the unmarked car hit an unoccupied vehicle, allowing Waters to run away. “I appreciate the continued support of Union County Sheriff’s Office in this case and am proud of the collaborative efforts of all those involved in making sure that Waters is exactly where he belongs,” Chief Bryan Gilliard said. Waters is being held at the Union County Detention Center. The conditions on his release have not been determined at this time.
