BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Democrats Marcus Randall, Redell Norman and Incumbent Darryl Hurst are all running for Metro Council District 5 to help keep pushing North Baton Rouge forward, each with his own mission. Norman says he's a lifelong product of District 5. He's involved with 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge and his nonprofit organization, The Resistance. "I live in the district as well as my businesses in the district right here where we are today, you know? And so, I just want the people to know that I'm available," Norman said. Gun violence and infrastructure are his biggest concerns. He says if elected he plans to work on keeping violence down and the community growing. Once we get something done, we think that that's the end all, be all to the situation. That's only the beginning, right? Once you get something done, you must maintain it, and that's what I'm running on maintaining our infrastructure, maintaining our community," said Norman. Hurst has been in this seat since 2022. He says community service is his calling. "I had a nonprofit that was built on three things, which was sports, education and community service. I used sports to attract the kids," said Hurst. Each candidate stresses the importance of cutting down crime, with Hurst breaking ground on a future East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office substation in the district. Hurst says if re-elected, he'll continue to fix the issue by bringing better opportunities to residents. Gov. Landry’s tax plan raises concerns for local budgets "That's my goal over the next 10 years is to erase the curse of the last 40 by bringing hope back to the community, by bringing workforce education, entrepreneurial skills to make sure that these people can go into the workforce and not just make a wage. But make a livable wage," said Hurst. Randall is a native of District 5. He was a former quarterback for LSU and moved up to play for the NFL with two teams, the Tennessee Titans and the Green Bay Packers. He came home to coach football at several high schools and is currently coaching at Istrouma High School. He says it was his mission to come home and give back to his community. "I made a vow that once I finish playing ball, I want to come back to my city and to give back to the next generation that would come in behind me. So, that's what I've been doing for the last 16 years," said Randall. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
