WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) said it rescued six dogs, three puppies and three turtles from unsafe and unsanitary conditions at a D.C. home. The HRA said someone reported seeing dogs living in poor conditions in the backyard of a home in the Southwest area. When HRA officers went to execute a search and seizure warrant on Wednesday, Oct. 23, they found multiple dogs chained up outside without adequate shelter. HRA officers also discovered three turtles in a tank, with no dry land they could access. Officials said all the dogs were covered in fleas and surrounded by feces. The dogs and turtles are in the care of the HRA. HRA said they will be examined by a vet and will receive the medical treatment they need. They said a puppy already received care for anemia related to a hookworm infestation. "Situations like these are incredibly sad, and can be very difficult for even the most seasoned humane law enforcement officers," said Kate Meghji, the Chief Operating Officer of the HRA. "We are incredibly proud of this team who goes above and beyond to protect animals each and every day." The case is under investigation. HRA said they are overcrowded and in need of adopters and fosters. To adopt or foster a pet, visit the HRA's website. Click here to donate to help animals in emergencies.
