ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Early voting will begin Saturday, which will also be the last day you can register to vote in this election cycle. Have you ever wondered what exactly happens after you cast your ballot? News 8 spoke with some Board of Election commissioners to learn about the process and security measures. The people behind the scenes at the Board of Elections have been working diligently to prepare for the election cycle. New York's Election Law requires parties to work together to finish this massive undertaking. 25th Congressional District Debate: Morelle vs Sadwick Mindy Robinson is the Republican commissioner of the Wayne County Board of Elections. She explained if she wanted to get started with processing absentee ballots. "I have to wait until my counterpart gets here because we have bipartisan badge access on our ballot rooms, our machine rooms, our EMS rooms," Robinson said. Wayne County's Board of Elections partners with the Sheriff's Office to ensure that ballots are secured — whether it's during early voting or on Election Day. "Sheriff's deputies will deploy on election night, they will be the ones that will be picking up our machine cards and our machine tapes and that's basically our chain of custody in bringing those back to the office," said Robinson. "If you want to know more about the process you should be involved," added Democratic Commissioner Kristin Victorious. "You know we have over 300 poll workers and they are the face of democracy and what they bring and I just couldn't thank them enough. Without them, we wouldn't have elections." Monroe County hits voter registration record In Monroe County, Lisa Nicolay is the Republic commissioner, who explains there are four spots where the data, voter info, and selection are saved. Besides paper ballots, there are also two electronic means that store pictures of those ballots and results. There is also an old-fashioned receipt tape, which helps tabulate the results. "We actually do a 3% audit with the paper ballots, where we take 3% of the machines that were voted on on election night and early voting and we re-run those paper ballots through a second set of machines — that are not Dominion, they're actually Clear Ballots — totally different vendor, totally different system and since I've been here, they've matched perfectly 100%," said Nicolay. "If they don't for some reason, there's ways to regulate that and move forward." The commissioners also told News 8 that the vote count on election night is considered unofficial until all of those audits and back-check processes can happen in the wheels following the election. Results are finalized typically the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
