BROCKPORT, N.Y. (WROC) -- Lining up for the strike are students of all abilities from both Holley and Kendall school districts. They are the first to participate in this all new Special Olympics Unified Sport for their high schools: bowling! "This is my first year, so I’m going to make it a good year!" says Hayden Keiffer from Holley. "The most important part is have fun!" adds Isaac MacNeill, a student from Kendall. Unified sports combine athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to make sure everyone equally feels part of the team. The students say they’re very grateful for the opportunity to give this new sport a try. "It makes me feel something very emotional inside, because I am doing really, really good in school and I feel like I could do really, really good in bowling," Hayden explains to News 8's Mikhaela Singleton. One of the team's coaches, Jason Cole, says after watching his own children try unified basketball, he was happy to help teach the kids some skills he hopes they keep for life. "I do enjoy bowling myself. I do feel like it’s a lifelong activity that I think all of these students are going to be able to participate in, and I’m just glad that I can show them this sport that I also like and hope that they continue on," he says. With a long season ahead of them, the students say they’re ready to learn, to win, and to enjoy themselves. "I just want to come here and have so much fun, be in shape, and meet some of my old friends," says Isaac. "Good sportsmanship, and being very, very good to the other team and anytime they win, say congratulations," says Hayden of what the sport has taught him so far.
