SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The state and defense rested their cases Wednesday in the Leilani Simon murder trial. Closing statements are now underway, and a verdict could be handed down Thursday. In total, the jury heard from 33 witnesses ranging from FBI officials and local police detectives to Simon's brother and her then-boyfriend. Simon, accused of killing her 20-month-old son Quinton and throwing his body in a dumpster, declined to testify. WSAV is streaming the proceedings live on this page. The state begins its closing argument. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Dean walks the jury through each of the 19 counts Simon faces. Handed down in December 2022 in an eight-page indictment, the charges include malice murder, two counts of felony murder, concealing the death of another, false report of a crime and 14 counts of making a false statement. 11:37 a.m. - Dean ends the state's closing argument after an hour and a half. The court breaks for a 15-minute recess. 11:54 p.m. - Judge Tammy Stokes calls the court back into session. Defense attorney Martin Hilliard begins his closing argument. "They have speculated wildly, I might add, but they've produced no evidence," he says. 12:45 p.m. - Chatham County Assistant District Attorney Jenny Parker concludes closing arguments for the state. 1:08 p.m. - Parker wraps up closing arguments. The jury is released for lunch. Stokes says she will charge the jury after lunch.
