BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Black mold was discovered at Bernalillo County Animal Care Services and Resource Center, and efforts are underway to remove it and protect animals and staff. The areas affected include the main hallway and surrounding rooms, as well as several kennel areas. The county said the most affected areas have been closed off and staff is working to move the animals once housed in those spaces to new locations. To allow for this work, Animal Care Services and Resource Center will be closed beginning today through Monday. Regular hours are expected to resume on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Other areas of the building where mold was found will take more time to be cured and will remain closed until a solution has been found. To help with the relocation of approximately 36 animals short-term and potentially 28 more long-term during remediation, Animal Care Services is encouraging community members who are unable to adopt to sign up to foster. Those who are interested in becoming a foster companion can submit an interest card, here. The county is also working closely with anyone who may have been exposed.
