6 taken to the hospital after hazmat incident at Hong Kong restaurant in West Warwick

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Health is currently testing material that was found in Hong Kong restaurant in West Warwick last night.
According to Chief J. Jeffrey Varone, crews responded to the restaurant to find smoke coming from the basement.
The owner, according to officials, was fumigating with a product they were unfamiliar with, that they had no safety data sheets for.
According to a spokesperson from DEM, multiple different emergency management agencies responded to including DEM, the Cranston Fire Department’s Hazardous Material Team, the Coventry Fire Department’s Decontamination Team, and the West Warwick Fire Department responded to the restaurant after an unknown insecticide fumigant was used at the location.
A total of six firefighters were sent to Kent County Hospital for evaluation and released as of this morning.
The spokesperson said there was no release to the environment as the fumes were released inside the building.
The Cranston HazMat Team did contain the material and provided it to DEM for submission to the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) Chemical Laboratory today for testing.
