KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Flavored tobacco, including vapes, could soon be banned in Kansas City. The city council will discuss this potential ban at a meeting Thursday afternoon. The flavored tobacco ban ordinance will be heard and discussed at 2 p.m. This is an issue city leadership has been looking into for the last few weeks. What was that smell in Kansas City this morning? Members of the Kansas City City Council said the disparities of chronic health issues in poor neighborhoods are the main reason for the ban. Supporters said the flavors make the product more addictive as well as enticing to teens. Kansas City would be the first city on either side of the state line to ban flavored tobacco products. But, they would join a list of nearly 400 cities across the United States with similar bans in place. San Francisco and New York City are among the largest cities with ordinances. Kansas City's ordinance would also create a license for businesses to sell tobacco products and establish compliance checks. Oden’s owners explain why Belton restaurant closed Those against the ban cite government overreach and economic impact as reasons to not move forward. The ban is expected to cost the city more than one million dollars a year in tax revenue. A similar ordinance failed to pass in 2020.
