GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - While the Halloween season is a fun time for kids and adults, officials with the Wisconsin Humane Society say it can also be a stressful and dangerous time for pets. Old Glory Honor Flight returns home with hand-written letters from students With safety for all pets in mind, the Wisconsin Humane Society is sharing the following simple tips to keep pets safe during the Halloween season. Keep candy and treats away from and out of reach of pets: Chocolate and some other sweets can be toxic for pets. If someone's pet does consume candy, especially chocolate, they should immediately contact their veterinarian. Be cautious of costumes for pets: While some pets may be open to wearing a costume, it is important to make sure the costume does not limit their ability to walk, breathe, bark, or meow. If a pet looks uncomfortable or stressed while in a costume, take a quick picture and then take the costume off Keep pets in a safe indoor space: Pets, even the most social ones, can get stressed or scared by strange masks, bright flashing lights, and noises. Anyone choosing to take their pet trick-or-treating should keep a close watch on them and take them inside if they show signs of being stressed. Watch out for dangerous decorations: Pets that are curious could potentially knock over a lit jack-o-lantern, burn themselves, and even start a fire. Corn cob sticks and glow sticks are also harmful for dogs and are harmful if ingested. Ensure wires and other cords are hidden and not a safety hazard Make sure pet ID information is up to date: Scared pets can run off and get lost, so keeping their ID information up to date helps to quickly reunite pets with their owners For more information about the Wisconsin Humane Society or to see what pets are available for adoption, click here.
