MANDAN, ND (KXNET) — The Morton County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a caller posing as a member of the sheriff's office. The caller used the Sheriff's Office phone number and claimed to be one of the officers. The caller then went on to threaten to take court action against the victim. In common phone scams, calls like this typically involve asking the victim to either provide personal or financial information or for the victim to "buy" their way out of trouble through gift cards or money transfers. The Morton Counrty Sheriff's Office says it doesn't make phone calls threatening legal action or demanding payment though gift cards or money tranfers. If you receive such a call or if you have concerns about a call supposedly from law enforcement, you're advised to hang up and call the sheriff's office to verify the validity of the call.
