BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Prairieville man can face up to 10 years in state prison after he was found guilty of aggravated battery by an Ascension Parish jury. In September 2023, the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office was called to a home in Prairieville about a physical altercation. A news release from 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky L. Babin said deputies found a male victim with a bandage wrapped around his head and learned that the victim was working on a vehicle at the residence when Wade Melancon, 54, came over to help. According to the district attorney's office, an argument began and Melancon said, "If you don’t move, I will hit you." "Shortly after, Melancon struck the victim in the face with a pipe-like lever from a tire jack causing a laceration to the victim’s facial area. Deputies made contact with Melancon, who admitted to striking the victim," the district attorney's office said. Melancon was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail. His sentencing was deferred to a later date. The district attorney’s office intends to file a habitual offender bill.
