For the record: They don’t come much bigger than this in area football this week, with The News-Herald’s No. 5 team in the Top of the Crop (VASJ) hosting No. 6 (Gilmour). Both teams have already clinched playoff berths. A VASJ win could clinch a first-round home game in the playoffs, whereas Gilmour has already done that. … Cooper Panteck, quarterback for the visiting Lancers, is having an unheard of season. He has thrown for 2,161 yards (completing 71 percent of his passes), with 31 touchdowns and zero interceptions. He has a slew of talent around him in the likes of Sean Dillard (46 catches, 746 yards), Lars Broberg (25-503) and Ohio State recruit Brody Lennon (21-446). Nathan Lennon and C.J. Santataga share the running back duties. No team has held the Lancers to fewer than 33 points this year. … VASJ has played a tougher schedule this year, their two losses coming to Pennsylvania powerhouse Erie McDowell and Division III, Region 9 top seed Youngstown Ursuline. Even without Bo Jackson (knee injury), VASJ has run the ball well with TJ Moore (885 yards rushing). QB Johnny Vuraich (1,210 yards, 18 touchdowns) has strong targets in Christian Chase (19 catches, 325 yards) and Brian Kortovich (21-236). … Gilmour’s run defense will be in the spotlight in this game, while VASJ’s defense is by far the best the high-scoring, prolific Lancers have faced this year.
