Baton Rouge Police officer indicted after 2023 crash leaves 1 dead

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge Police officer was indicted in connection to a deadly car accident that took place in Oct. 2023.
Sharmaine Buckley, 29, of Baton Rouge, was indicted on two counts of negligent injuring and reckless operation of a vehicle by an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury, according to court documents.
Buckley was responding to a call along Government Street around 10:26 p.m. on Oct. 20, 2023, when she reportedly ran a traffic signal in her marked unit and crashed into Caleb James Chappetta's black Chevrolet Impala. Chappetta, 38, died at the scene as a result of the crash.
Baton Rouge Police said other police units were attempting to make contact with armed suspects who fired at police around Government Street and South 16th Street when the crash occurred. Police said eight other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Buckley was arrested and initially charged with negligent homicide, two counts of negligent injuring, reckless operation of a vehicle and emergency vehicle: exceptions. Police said Buckley was placed on administrative leave.
