FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Tavion Tapscott of Fresno was in court Wednesday, charged with the murder of 21-year-old Breaja Jones, officials said. Tavion waived his arraignment timeline and will return to court to make his plea on Oct. 30. His bail was set for $1.6 million. The Fresno County District Attorney says Jones and Tapscott used to date and they had a child together. Clovis Police say Jones was shot dead in her home on Oct. 19, with their child nearby. Tapscott is now charged with murder, discharge of a weapon and child abuse. The District Attorney says he was already out on bail for another domestic violence charge against Jones when he went to her house to pick up his things. Officials say they got in a fight and Tapscott shot Jones, killing her. “That is not that is not unheard of. A lot of the times with abusive situations, there's been multiple instances of domestic violence,” Marjaree Mason Center Program Director Leticia Campos said. Campos says seeing potential domestic violence cases like this one never gets easier.  “It's never easy hearing stories of what is taking place, how someone is being hurt by someone that is supposed to love and care for them,” Campos said. She says the signs of domestic violence are often subtle; they do not always look like physical injuries. “If you're close to someone, whether that is a friend or family member, and you feel that they've isolated themselves, that is a key indicator,” Campos said. Campos urges anyone experiencing domestic violence to call their confidential 24-hour hotline at 559-233-4357. She says it’s important to seek help, even if you don’t think the violence is very serious. “It will eventually worsen. It will eventually escalate. So, right now, maybe it's starting with some verbal abuse, putting you down, calling you names, diminishing your abilities, but essentially that continuum of violence… It can lead to you losing your life,” Campos said.
