FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - With the countdown on until the Nov. 5 General Election, YourCentralValley.com is taking an inside look at each race. In Fresno County District 2, voters will decide who will represent them on the Board of Supervisors in a race between incumbent Steve Brandau and Fresno City Councilmember Garry Bredefeld. We caught up with each candidate to find out more about their experience, and why they think they're the best choice to represent the district.  Incumbent Steve Brandau has served on the Board of Supervisors' District 2 seat since he was elected in 2019. Brandau, a small business owner, also previously represented District 6 on the Fresno City Council. "There's all kinds of areas where being a business owner brings something to the table and the decisions that we make upstairs," said Brandau. Now sitting in Brandau's former seat on Fresno City Council, is Garry Bredefeld, who has served as the District 6 Councilmember since 2017. Bredefeld was a lieutenant in the Navy for three years and a retired clinical psychologist. "I'm a strong voice for the people I represent. I never forget that I'm representing them and we need that kind of leadership," he said. Both men are conservatives who agree strongly in backing law enforcement and say they would both aim to steer Measure C dollars toward road repair if the ballot measure is renewed in the coming years. Each candidate was asked what main issues they would prioritize if elected to the county board. Brandau says if reelected, he would push to create recreational space for residents, like on the San Joaquin River. He says, on the other hand, economic development would also be a priority. His plan for that would include turning his yearslong vision of a 3,000-acre industrial park within Fresno County into a reality. "I've taken the lead on that. My colleagues have been supportive, so, right now it's unanimous support. We want to get an industrial park built in Fresno County. A lot of hard work, but it would employ 40,000 people at full buildout." Bredefeld says his main priorities would be to increase transparency with the public on board votes and actions, actions he says would include the budget. Additionally, he plans to continue work on the homeless crisis, a crisis he claims Fresno County has taken a backseat to, especially when it comes to working with its cities, particularly the city of Fresno. "The Board of Supervisors has the Department of Social Services, the Department of Public Health, City of Fresno doesn't have that," said Bredefeld. "They've not been a partner with the City of Fresno. The City of Fresno had to deal with the homelessness and all those wraparound services that we provide without the assistance of the county." In response, Brandau says he has served with both the city and county and he sees the disconnect, as he credited "dramatically" different opinions on issues like homelessness. However, he promised no matter what, he would always be willing to have a conversation. "I've got endorsements from major Democrats that I've worked with, Libertarians that I've worked with, people that come together," said Brandau. "They have different viewpoints than me. I can sit down at a table, have a rational conversation with them, not call them names, not attack their lifestyle and really advance the ball." Bredefeld, explaining why he should be on the board, says those elected to positions of power have to be "fearless". He tells me the board is due for a shake-up, as he promised to bring the county and all of its cities together. "They vest in a retirement system, it becomes a retirement club. That's not what Garry Bredefeld believes in," he said. "And so, I'm going to continue to fight for the people at the county level, become a partner with the cities, that has not happened, and we will join together and do a lot of great things."
