(Kyle Franko/ Trentonian Photo)Expand HOPEWELL TWP. — For 40 minutes the resurgent West Windsor South girls soccer side held its own against top-seeded Hopewell Valley in a Colonial Valley Conference Tournament semifinal Wednesday night. But as so many other teams have found out this year, playing Hopewell Valley tough is a much different proposition than actually beating the Bulldogs. As a result, Hopewell Valley was able to roar into the championship game with a second-straight, second-half three-goal explosion and a solid 3-0 win over West Windsor South. The CVC championship game is slated for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and it will be played on Hopewell’s pitch. The Valley Girls’ opponent will be Allentown, which advanced with a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame earlier in the evening. “I think in the beginning we were a little nervous, but in the second half we settled down and played our game,” said standout freshman winger Meg Kurian after she scored her team’s second and third goals. “It was a matter of being more focused and playing with a little more energy in the second half,” said Hopewell Valley coach John McGinley, whose team extended its unbeaten streak to 16 games. “We did better in the second half at getting to the second ball.” The scoring outburst following the restart happened right away as Colbie Pagnotta alertly blasted home a follow-up shot from close range just 26 seconds into the second half. Pagnotta’s goal understandably put the Pirates back on their heels and f e minutes later Kurian made the score 2-0. On this play, a pass from Gianna Azara sailed over the head of Pirate keeper Sofia Latif Estaban and landed at the feet of Kurian. From there, Kurian deftly directed the ball just inside the post for her fifth goal of the season. “It was a perfect pass from Gianna,” recalled Kurian. A little over 20 minutes later Kurian upped her goal total for the year to six. This came after a wild sequence that included a spectacular kick save by Latif Estaban before Kurian converted a rebound from close range. Hopewell ended up with a staggering 27-4 advantage in shots at goal, but doesn’t mean the Pirates didn’t have some positive moments. In the first half, South was able to work passing combinations to get downfield and had its share of possession. West Windsor South’s Riley Duguay and Maya Montemayor came into this game with a combined 32 goals, but they have a lot of company when it comes to not scoring against Hopewell. During its 16-game unbeaten streak ,Hopewell has yielded a minuscule five goals. “They have some very talented players,” said McGinley of the Pirates. “It’s nice to see how their program is building and improving.” West Windsor South (9-4-2) 0 0 – 0 Hopewell Valley (15-2-2) 0 3 – 3 Goals: Pagnotta, Kurian 2. Assits: Buchert, Azara, Yademic. Shots: WWS-4. HV-27. Saves: WWS-Latif Estaban 11. HV-LiVecchi 5.
