(Kyle Franko/ Trentonian Photo)Expand HOPEWELL TWP. — The Allentown High girls soccer team keeps finding a way to win even as its injury list seems to get longer by the day. Let’s call it smoke, mirrors and a whole lot of Martha. Martha Olorunnisola scored twice for the second straight round, including the game winner in the 59th minute, and third-seeded Redbirds booked their place in the inaugural CVC Tournament championship game with a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Notre Dame on Wednesday evening at Ackerson Field. “These girls got grit,” coach Kim Maurer said. “I’m so proud of them. They are just fighting for every single win, every single goal, fighting for 80 minutes every game.” In big games, you need your big players to step up. No better time for that than under the lights against one of your biggest rivals with a spot in the final on the line. “I kept telling my team to get the ball up to me and I’ll find a way to get it in the net,” said Olorunnisola, who is up to 12 goals on the season. “That’s what I did.” The Redbirds (12-5-1) won their sixth straight game and meet top-seeded Hopewell Valley on Saturday afternoon for the CVC title. The Bulldogs advanced with a 3-0 victory over fifth-seeded West Windsor-Plainsboro South. Allentown made the brighter start and was rewarded for that in the 19th minute when Olorunnisola tucked in a rebound after Irish goalkeeper Leah Zeidman palmed away Amanda Hoglund’s initial effort. That’s where the score stayed until early in the second half when Notre Dame’s pressing paid off in an equalizer. Ashton Robbins won a tackle in midfield to get the Irish going and Reagan O’Mara slid the ball in for Isabella Lynch to finish first time. The momentum had swung at that point with ND winning the ball back higher up the pitch and sending runners in behind Allentown’s back three. The Irish generated two great scoring opportunities, but Redbirds goalkeeper Danielle DeCarlo — DeCarlo plays in the second half and Olivia Cieslak starts the games between the sticks — made good saves to deny Riley Cunningham and then ND’s top scorer O’Mara. With the Irish looking the more likely side at this point, Olorunnisola struck against the run of play. Kaylee Feldman popped a hopeful ball over the top that Olorunnisola made the most of by beating a pair of defenders before getting what ended up the winning touch. “She’s insane,” Redbirds freshman center back Chelsea Faulkner said of her older teammate. “Love her. She works so hard. She has to be one of the hardest working players out there.” Notre Dame (13-5-1) had a 12-game winning streak snapped, but is still in good position to host a first-round game in the Non-Public A South sectional. “I’m so proud of the change (from) the way we started,” Irish coach Lauren Diaz said. “We still have a lot of season left. This chapter is closed and we got to move and look at the next chapter.” Two of ND’s five losses are by the same 2-1 scoreline against Allentown. The Redbirds also knocked them out of the final edition of the Mercer County Tournament at this stage last season. “It’s a big rivalry and everybody always steps up for that,” Diaz said. “It’s always a great battle. They are a great team and today they got the better side of us.” Allentown had reached six of the last eight MCT finals before the tournament dissolved — it went 0-6 in those games and lost four of them to Pennington — and the prep schools were ousted in favor of the CVC event. “We got to win one of them,” said Maurer, who does expect some good injury news with the return of senior center back Lauren Fanning. “It’s about time we win it this year.” Allentown (12-5-1) 1 1 — 2 Notre Dame (13-5-1) 0 1 — 1 Goals: Olorunnisola 2 (A). Lynch (ND). Assists: Feldman (A). R. O’Mara (ND). Shots: 8 (A). 8 (ND). Saves: Cieslak 1, DeCarlo 3 (A). Zeidman 1 (ND).
