MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A Chicago artist and poet has made her mark in Memphis, spray painting sidewalks and the sides of abandoned buildings with messages of healing and hope. Kimberly Brown, who goes by the name Boots, is on a mission to stamp the streets in every state with her personal poetry. During a three-day visit to Bluff City, she left behind more than 200 inspirational notes at nearly 10 locations. South Main Street. WREG photo Lamar Avenue and S. Where they are picking up their coffee or walking their dog or things like that," Brown said. Brown turned to poetry several years ago to heal a broken heart and decided to share her words with the world to help others deal with heartache and the everyday traumas of life. Since then, she has painted sidewalks in 45 states and Puerto Rico. So, when people say I relate, I’m sorry because I know," Brown said. "I’m glad I also know exactly what that feels like. So, a lot of them are like, things I say to myself or hopefully people will read and relate to." Brown has published three books of poetry. She also designs and prints T-shirts of her street art out of her apartment. Brown said she's humbled and grateful that her self-affirmations have touched so many. "It sounds cliche to say, but I don't do this for fame or attention or likes all that Instagram brought," said Brown. "Even Memphis people who write me will write paragraphs like I was going through the breakup and I needed a sign, and then I saw this, and it changed my life. Those are the things that really hit me hard and that’s honestly the motivation that I keep doing this work." Browns said she doesn't always get permission to paint the sidewalks, but so far, no city has complained about her words of wisdom. Brown said as she continues to heal, she's able to see others heal along with her.
