BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Those competing against one another for the top spot at Via Arte this year received news Wednesday of who won the top awards. Esai Mendez took home the People's Choice Award for a piece featuring labor leader Dolores Huerta, Dolly Parton, Frida Kahlo, Marsha P Johnson, and Malala Yousafzai. Another piece, called "Queen-Chow-A Moqui" by Emily Lostaunau won best in festival. The best use of color went to a Frankenstein rendition by Kayla Bryant. A piece, called "Self-Portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle" by Abby Kinsey won best technique.
