MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- According to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Thomas Taylor, a submission error for state aid in the Charles W. Woodward Project led to a $39.3 million loss for public schools in the county.  The superintendent admitted to the miscalculation error in his capital improvements program report to the local board of education.  “My recommended CIP approach also reallocates unexpected funds from previous projects to mitigate the impact of a reduction in state aid that resulted from an error in the MCPS submission for aid in the Charles W. Woodward project,” said Taylor, whose tenure as superintendent began in late June.   &pizza pulls ‘Marion Berry Knots’ from menu after backlash from DC community In the letter, Taylor goes on to explain “MCPS has been informed that we will not be receiving $39.3 million in state aid that was expected due to errors in calculation prevailing wage and bid award across multiple phases of the project.”  MCPS parents who learned about the miscalculation this week told DC News Now they’re left worried not knowing how the loss of aid will directly impact their children.  “What happens in our schools follows these students for the rest of their lives and I think MCPS forgets that sometimes,” said Andrea Levy, an MCPS parent.  In an effort to address the problem, Taylor recommended in his proposal the transfer of approximately $17 million in unexpended appropriations from several improvement projects:  $7 million from the Building Modifications for Program Improvements Project $5 million from the William Tyler Page ES Addition project $3.4 million from the Westbrook ES Addition project $1.3 million from the Takoma Park MS Addition project $1 million from the Parkland MS Addition project However, that leaves a 21-million-dollar gap that parents believe could go into better facilities and programs.  “Every student has their own needs, their own expectations, and their own dreams,” said Levy. “When I hear that they’re taking away more and more money from our schools, you just see those dreams falling.”
