PERINTON, N.Y. (WROC) -- The walking trail through Hart’s Woods in Perinton is now a little safer thanks to one hardworking scout. Sixteen-year-old Jackson Newcomb says the tranquil silence surrounded by the beautiful fall foliage should be enjoyed by everyone, which is why he dedicated his Eagle Scout project to improving a walking bridge for folks to cross safely. "I was walking this trail for my hiking unit and the bridge here was falling apart and quite dilapidated," Jackson says while recalling how he first came to his idea back when he was a freshman in high school. During his walk two years ago, Jackson says he noticed the old bridge was buckling under people’s weight as they crossed and the railing was unsteady. Thinking about the countless people—children and pets in tow—who must pass by every day, he lead his project team on the 255-hour mission to fundraise, demolish the old bridge and build the new one, plus a nice sitting bench. He hopes more people will be inspired to visit Hart’s Woods for both pleasure and the improvement of their mental health. "I have always advocated for mental health among my friends and family, and knowing that I can make a community wide impact is tremendous and I’m very glad that I am able to have that impact on those around me," Jackson says. Hart’s Woods has been recognized as a National Natural Landmark since 1972.
