MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is asking for public help in identifying a Jane Doe from an unsolved homicide from 1989. The Madera Sheriff’s Office says on September 24, 1989, in a rural area of Madera County the remains of an unidentified woman were located. In 2020, Madera County Missing Persons Detective Padgett reopened unsolved cases to attempt to identify human remains using DNA technology.  Padgett exhumed two Jane Does, including the unidentified woman from this case.  With the help from Fresno State University Anthropologist Dr. C. Juarez, and the Department of Justice Bureau of Forensic Services Missing Persons Program in Richmond, California, Detective Padgett contacted Forensic Artist PJ Puterbaugh to generate a reconstruction of our unidentified victim. The sheriff’s office says they are reaching out to the public with this rendering in the hopes a friend or family member of the victim may recognize and help us to identify her. The Jane Doe is described as being 5 feet 3 inches tall and 130 lbs, with black hair.  She is estimated to have been approximately 16-28 years old. She may have relatives in Mexico, according to officials. Anyone with information leading to her identification is asked to contact Madera County Sheriff’s Detective Padgett at (559)474-2302. Tips may also be emailed to MCSOTip@maderacountycom. Tips may also be made on the Madera County Sheriff’s Mobile App: MaderaSheriffApp.com. The Madera County Investigations Bureau would like to acknowledge the Madera Cemetery District and its employees for their time and assistance in both Jane Doe exhumations. There remains an ongoing criminal investigation regarding the circumstances surrounding Jane Doe’s death. Deputies are asking anyone who may have information, to please contact Detectives at (559) 675-7770. The other Jane Doe, an unidentified woman from a still unsolved May 1987 case, was positively identified as Christine Lester on March 15, 2023.  Christine’s remains were later returned to her family in Indian Wells, Arizona.
