About 2,300 homes in West Salem lost power Wednesday morning after a construction vehicle got caught in a wire and pulled a Salem Electric pole down. It appears that a vacuum truck belonging to a private company was driving with its boom up, said Jacob Knudsen, member services manager at the power company. He said it got caught in the guy wire which goes across the street. The accident happened near the intersection of Northwest Orchard Heights Road and Northwest Linwood Street, Knudsen said. Salem Electric dispatched crews to the incident shortly after 11 a.m., according to the company’s Facebook post. Knudsen said that, as of 12:41 p.m, just over 200 people in West Salem were still without power after Salem Electric brought sections back online through essentially quarantining the problem area in the grid. The final group of about 200, closest to the incident, will likely be without power for another 4 to 6 hours, Knudsen said. “We won’t be able to bring them back online until the pole’s replaced,” he said. As of Wednesday afternoon, there were no detours due to the incident, Knudsen said. After publication, Salem Electric updated the figure to about 200. Contact reporter Abbey McDonald: [email protected] or 503-575-1251.
