NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – It's a shoplifting case with several unusual twists. A New Mexico man was charged with replacing the bar codes to make items much cheaper. Authorities say this suspect was only after one thing, sports trading cards. Steven Moreno was arrested Tuesday, accused of shoplifting in Walmart's in Gallup, Grants, Bernalillo, and Albuquerque. "What appeared as though on the surveillance camera he was doing was getting the merchandise that he would want and then basically taping or sticking on those SKU tags over the existing correct tag and then going to the checkout lane and then scanning them and walking right out," says John Duran, Director of Special Prosecutions with the New Mexico Department of Justice. The criminal complaint states Moreno would use two barcodes where the prices were a little more than a dollar and the other was about $4. Investigators say, starting in December of last year, Moreno would walk into the Walmarts and put his barcodes on trading card packs and boxes that were as much as $60. Alamogordo man receives sentence for providing gun used to kill police officer Duran says they will be focusing on the retail price of the boxes rather than how much all the individual cards could be worth. "I do know that trading cards can fluctuate in value depending on which ones you get. You know, my kids have Pokemon cards and those things go up and down in value as well. I think anything that's sort of a commodity in a trading market that goes beyond a retail purchase I think would interest anyone," says Duran. The criminal complaint states in February, a Walmart employee confronted Moreno but he left the store before he could purchase anything. Investigators say the boxes he left behind suggest Moreno manually printed the barcodes. The complaint says Moreno executed this scheme more than two dozen times with the last one being earlier this month. Steven Moreno went before a judge Wednesday and was released on his own recognizance. He faces two felony shoplifting charges.
